grasscloth: timeless and stylish

Sunday, April 29

This weekend I am up to my eyeballs in grasscloth wallpaper for two different clients.  It's an amazing option for any room.  Although wallpaper comes and goes, grasscloth has withstood the test of time.  My favorite options of the moment are the metallic versions, and the more saturated colors.

All sources can be found here.

What do you think of this look?
Anyone else ready to add grasscloth to their walls?

I love grasscloth!!!! It has to be great for hiding marks on the wall. I would love to add it to our mudroom. Do you know of any affordable sources?

I don't like it. What bugs me about it is that you can't line it up so that it matches smoothly. It ends up looking like mismatched stripes on the wall with all the seams showing.

I am putting a blue/green/brown one in the senior partner's office of a law firm. It looks great with his antique dark wood desk and the new industrial carpeting. Hope to show it on the blog...someday. I like that you can't match up the seams...more organic.

Metallic grasscloth is perfection, I'm in love with it.

NOTHING elevates the status of room like grasscloth. As one commenter pointed out, though, it can make some people nuts because of the mismatched pattern and the visual of the seams. Knowing your tolerance for that is critical. Me, I LOVE it :)

I love it, but it is hard to keep clean (it holds a lot of dust), and it doesn't work well in heavily used spaces or in homes with cats -- cats will use the walls like a giant scratching post....It's great in gently used spaces, not so great in family rooms, halls, and entry rooms. I still love it, but it doesn't work for everyone or in every space.

Abby I hesitate only because it has those connotations from the seventies of " Oh no Grass-cloth, which quickly became dated.

Now for the younger designer; it is a hit, an elegant updated version!

If you watch Mad Men you see lots of grasscloth in the set design. I put a Brunschwig & Fils grasscloth product in our home office in 2004. Still looks classic and it was vinyl backed so it has held up well. Be sure you use a good product that doesnt shed and use a skilled paper hanger or the seams will be a mess. Someone else mentioned put it in a lightly used room I agree, pets would be bad for it too.
