Bookshelves in the dining room have been on my "someday I want that in our house" list.  The image above is my favorite from today's list.  I'm not sure I could squeeze them into the dining room of our current house, but I may have just the perfect client for this look.

Here is a view into their future dining room.  They plan to make many changes to their new home, but here is the picture from the previous owners.
If you look past the kitchen island, the room with all the desks is actually the dining room.  We're going to use a white pedestal table, centered more in the middle of the room. Bookshelves would really give the space that something extra.  Here are some of my favorite examples.

These are actually built into the wall.  I love that they flank the buffet, still giving you room for storing serving pieces and linens.

This is a much more mod look.  It has the feel of built-in shelves, but really they are floating.  Probably far too contemporary for my client.

Love this look, except for the chair fabric.  The shelves of books give this room so much color and texture without feeling overwhelming or busy.

This is Emily Clark's office.  It's amazing. If you removed the laptop and added a few chairs, it's an instant dining room.  You can read more about the transformation here.

Are you convinced?  Would you add bookshelves to your dining room?  While we're playing this game, I'd also add a fireplace to my wish list of dining room features.  A girl has got to dream!  :-)

These images are great support for this idea! I love the House and Home example. And it's so true- these dining rooms can double as offices when not in use for entertaining! Very functional/beautiful idea!

Emily's is one of my favorite examples of bookshelves in a dining room/office. We are moving our dining room into our formal living room and turning the dining room into my hubby's home office. Thanks for more great inspiration and eye candy! Looking forward to seeing after photos of this clients home!

Now that's a lot of books. Sorry to say, we have a lot of books but not nearly that many! I can honestly say I never thought of bookshelves in the dining room but I can totally see it in these pictures. Genevieve did something similar on one of her recent shows. Loved the end result!

I think it looks pretty good! It wouldn´t be my first choice for book storage, but in case there´s no other space, I´d go for it!

People say bookshelves in a dining room make the room that much more cozy and I agree. They are interesting and can double-duty the room too.

I love books and bookshelves!!! I think you should go for it. I think it adds warmth and a cozy feeling to a house. I love making a space unique and this would really add fun to a sometimes boring room : )

Love books and the idea of them in the dining room is perfection! Makes it a duel space dining/library - very cool.

Absolutely! I did a little survey the other day on the Mom's group that I'm a part of to see what room in their home was the most underutilized and most said the dining room because it's so formal and they never eat there. I think by incorporating elements (such as bookshelves and extra seating) that could make the room double in function would be a great call. I love the Emily's office and the photo before that one too.

I love this look. I've been obsessing over Emily's office ever since I first saw it... I'm dying to make my library into my office now!!! (It's very similar to her set up... I just need a big table/desk.)

Love bookcases and dining rooms. So intimate somehow. I would love it for myself, but like you, I would adore a fireplace. That would be amazing. If we ever add on to our kitchen, my small family room with fireplace will become the dining room. This girl dreams, too! :)
