DIY sunburst mirror

Tuesday, January 24

The empty space over our piano has been haunting me.  Where is the color?  Where is the texture?  Where is the energy?

I was inspired by a few DIY sunburst mirrors I had seen going around
 blog land; especially Cassie's mirror.

Except I need more color on my walls.  So I decided to paint mine.
I went with Martha.  Have you seen her precious metals collection?

I bought this can ages ago but never decided how to use it.
The mirror was perfect.

Isn't it pretty?  It's not easy to tell, but the paint
has a metallic finish to it.

I bought two packs of wood shims from Lowe's.  I lightly sanded them a primed each one with KILZ.  Finally, I added two coats of Tide Pool.

I bought two floral rings, 12" and 18" in diameter, from Micheal's.  Just remember that they are in the floral section, because no one in the store had a clue what I was asking for.  Use a hot glue gun to glue the first layer of shims around the edge,
then thank the Lord that you don't have our ugly carpet
step back and refill your glue gun.  :-)

Add the second layer, filling in the blanks.  Just move the shims a few inches toward the middle to make them appear shorter than the first layer.

The third layer was slightly all over the place.

Finally, glue the mirror to the center!  But you'll have to come back tomorrow to see the results.  I'm not trying to be tricky, I just changed my mind on the size of the mirror.
So once again -- back to JoAnns.

I'm excited to see how it looks on the wall.  I must admit that this project has been an exercise in letting go of perfect.  There are mistakes, and flaws, but I believe the overall effect will be beautiful.

And I assumed you would be painting it white.
How silly am I? Leave it to you to pick such an awesome finish!

Thanks for the reminder about the Martha paints, I have been looking for a metallic and kind of forgot that she has a line.

And lovely color you picked! I've made that kind of mirror myself. http://www.decoradventures.com/2011/05/sunburst-mirror.html

Watch at Hobby Lobby (if you have one) for mirrors, I like the ones they have and they are half off sometimes.

I look forward to seeing the finished project!

I have loved this DIY and also was afraid when you decided to paint instead of stain, but because of the metallic paint choice it gives a gorgeous sparkle and look instead of a flat solid color. It's looking great!

That's right and YOU are the one who created it which is even more awesome. I can't wait to see it. I can tell from your photo that the paint has metallic in it - it's very pretty. I love how your living room is coming together.
