painting a pillow

Monday, March 14

Painting a pillow for the first time was a great experience!  Let me be clear that I have never put a brush to anything except a wall.  I am not a painter by any stretch of the imagination.  But I will say I understand the appeal.  I would do this again in a heartbeat.

I bought all of my materials at JoAnn's.  The total cost for brushes and paints was $7.50--thanks to coupons.

As a general rule, I never recommend using the pillows that come with your couch.  Don't be shy when you're choosing your sofa because chances are you can have custom pillows made in coordinating fabrics at no charge. So when we bought the luxe sofa I had no desire to keep the white, matching, lumbar pillows.

Jay convinced me to keep the pillows for later.  And when I saw Emily Henderson paint pillows on her show, I had a "I could do that" moment.  She used painters tape to create stripes.  It would also be simple to paint a chevron pillow or monogram.  But for this time I went free hand.
I like the finished look. The colors are a bit off in the picture but the middle is a dark green. It's not exactly the same as the West Elm pillow but this feels more "me".

Once I got started I thought I could give it a slight flame-stitch look.

This was such a fun project and didn't take long to complete.
I hope you like it!  I may have to create more because I'd like to try other patterns.

The take away?  Don't be afraid to use what you have and make it your own.You don't have to be a trained artist to try something new!
Are you convinced to paint a pillow of your own?
How was your weekend?

Editors note: I'm sorry for the crappy iPhone pictures.  My camera is on the fritz again.  Which I'm sure you know is a bloggers worst nightmare.

What?!?

Abby, this looks so great.

I tried to paint a wall this weekend... tracing the shape of my mirror, to go behind my mirror... if that makes sense. I haven't peeled away the tape yet to see how bad it looks. Doubting it looks as good as your pillow!

You should all try it--no question. Just make sure you share your end result with me because I'm nosy like that! :-)

Thanks for your comments! Posting this pillow was much more nerve wracking than posting any design I've done.

Heather, I don't think I'll keep it on the white couch because I already have chevron pillows there and I'm not crazy about having stripe next to stripe. Instead, it will live on the yellow sofa. If my camera decides to open I'll take a picture. :-)

I'm still a little hesitant to do it myself but I guess it's worth a shot.

That came out amazing! It inspired me to try...what about...it being kid friendly? How long did it take to fully dry? Like if said kid got food on it or some kind of drink...what would come of the paint?
